Domas Markevicius is a sculptor and ceramist based in Vilnius Lithuania.
In his studio, shapes materialise in an intuitive way. His creative process is akin to an intimate dialogue with clay as shapes are almost never premeditated but rather instinctive, transforming clay into a final abstract form, often close to nature, yet characterised by an unmistakable mark of strangeness - hence Heresy Stones.
He believes that raw clay, shaped entirely by hands, is an extremely interesting material to explore, both by artists and spectators. He invites us to feel smooth voluptuous curves in our palms, to get to know rough, cracked, ripped and wild surfaces with our fingertips.
Some of his works are fired in anagama kiln.
The anagama is a ancestral Chinese and then Japanese wood firing technique in a kiln in the shape of a chamber. The items are fired at very high temperature (up to 1400 degrees) for a long period of time, between 2 and 12 days. Burning wood produces ash and volatile salts that settle on the clay during the firing process and the complex interaction between the flame, the ash and the minerals of the clay body forms a natural ash glaze. This glaze shows beautiful variations of color and texture and as Domas says every piece can be considered as a microcosm of nature. Perfection is not just about control; it is equally about letting go.
