The work of Regina Mataitiene, one of the most famous black ceramic creators in Lithuania, mixes traditional Lithuanian pottery with modern functionality.
Together with her husband Vytautas and her two kids, they settled in Gruzdziai, a small and peaceful village in the centre of the country. They rebuilt a red bricks manor from the ruins, previously the dairy of the count Alexander Naryskin, and established their ceramic workshop in the wooden barn next to the house.
The process of making black ceramics is long. In a special kiln built into the ground, the pieces are fired at high temperature for 14 hours. Some of her vases that we show in our gallery are needle engraved, showing rows of delicate geometric patterns. Each single piece is unique and patiently decorated under the lens.
The rare talent to rediscover and revive the values inherent to the heritage of Lithuanian tradition makes Regina Mataitiene an irreplaceable « ambassador » in foreign exhibitions and fairs.
